Here Be Dragons

(Stop the World Records, 2003)

What is crucial about the fact that I very much like this album is that I was not expecting to. A good deal of music that comes out of the Druid community is simply not to my taste, being too close to folk or country, its lyrics rife with cliches, and generally too much talk of dragons and merlin played over gentle guitars. This album, despite its title (and cover design that didn't inspire me), is put together with more talent and more edge than most. Nor does it head over to other extreme of the angry Pagan noise. It is beautifully crafted.

Jim sounds a little like the best of Richard Ashcroft, and, though the music has a gentleness, it is rich and sharp with what I can only describe as a sense of seeking. The lyrics beautifully express a pagan mindset yet aren't pushy about it. The guitar is at times quite sublime. A few of the tracks were too easy-going for me, but the majority have a profoundly moody undercurrent that implies a darkness which is quite delicious. It is utterly professional. I loved it.
