Is Your Chocolate Vegetarian?
It was recently decided by Masterfoods, the owners of the Mars brand, that all Mars chocolates would no longer be vegetarian. Masterfoods have decided to change the recipe to use rennet (an enzyme taken from the stomachs of slaughtered calves) in the production of the whey powder they use in their chocolate.
One week later Masterfoods announced they had changed their mind, thanks to a campaign was run by the vegetarian society which encouraged 6000 people to phone and email the company to complain.
However, the reversal of the ‘no longer vegetarian’ policy is only partial. Only a few brands will remain vegetarian. These are Mars bars, Snickers, Galaxy and Maltesers.
Mars chocolates which are not suitable for vegetarians include Twix, Bounty, Celebrations, Topic and Milky Way.
Mars decline to comment on their responsibility to pay cocoa growers a fair wage and still do not produce any fairtrade chocolate.
